I’m back – and I’m tan! After spending a week in the Jamaican sunshine indulging in too many buffets and too many drinks, I was ready to get home and get back to a healthy diet.
Just kidding, I wanted a burrito.
My first day post-vacation started out with good intentions as I made my weekly trip to Trader Joe’s to stock up on all things healthy and lean. And too many plantain chips. Then I buzzed around all morning running errands, but by the time I got home and put the groceries away, all motivation to cook was gone.
I scrolled around on Yelp! for some inspiration, but nothing was jumping out and I didn’t want to waste money and calories on mediocre delivery. Although, I could feel myself getting hangry, so I knew I needed something quick. Ain’t nobody got time to wait an hour for food!
Luckily, my brain suddenly remembered my love for Jacobo’s and their top notch Mexican food. I hopped in the car and made the 10-minute drive to my favorite South Omaha grocery store. It is not obvious to passerby’s that they have hot and fresh food at the back counter; most would assume it is just a regular ole Mexican grocery store. But we all know what happens when you assume… (ahaha this joke never gets old).
This cash only little shop is always bumping and this day was no different. I waited in a line of about 15 people, but they are super speedy so my turn came up quick. Every time I go here, I always panic when I get to the counter. I’ll have a plan in my head to only get 2 enchiladas or 1 burrito and call it good, but nope.
I make my initial order, but for some reason every time they ask me, “anything else?” I feel the pressure to keep getting more until I realize I won’t have enough cash to cover “anything else”.
On this particular trip, I fell victim to 6 enchiladas, 1 burrito, a half-pound of carnitas, fresh chips, and salsa. My bad. I didn’t eat it all that day though – pinky promise I had some self-control! My total was less than $20, which is such a deal for the quality of the food and I have made it into 4 meals so far.
Well, that’s kind of a lie, it wasn’t just that purchase that I made into 4 meals. I went to the zoo with my friend, Jordan, the next day and after walking all afternoon we were hungry. So naturally I suggested we zip over to Jacobo’s since he had never tried it. I kept my cool and only ordered 1 burrito and 1 chile relleno – proud moment!
After my double dose of Mexican, I decided the time had to come to end the vacation eating and actually get back to normal eating. I also immediately decided to adjust that time to Monday morning so I could enjoy my friend’s birthday dinner at Nicola’s – oops!
