Neighborhood Hoppin’ – Blackstone, Benson, and North O

First up – laaaaaadies night! A few months after moving here back in 2015, I was lucky enough to be adopted into a group of wine loving girls in my apartment complex. Since then, we have taken turns hosting each other for Monday night viewings of The Bachelor(ette) complete with wine, snacks, and venting about life.

The group has evolved over the years, with the most recent change being the departure of one of the real OG’s, Katherine. It is always bittersweet when friends move, but I am so excited for her new adventure back home in Minnesota!

To wish her farewell, we got the gang together and ventured down to the Blackstone Neighborhood. It had been a few months since I had been down that way, and hot dang…new stuff just keeps popping up!

We started out at Blackstone Social with a round of PalOmaha’s (get it? Like a Paloma, but Omaha…haaaa). This spot can get pretty packed, but with a quick Facebook message the day prior, we were able to lock in a reservation for a table in the back. Service was attentive and the drinks were strong – definitely a solid start to the night!

Next up we snuck out the back and wandered around to a basement door with a light burning outside. We stood around thinking maybe we were in the wrong spot, but then a gentleman slid open a peephole and asked how many people we had. Sounds creepy, eh?

We were escorted into a cedar waiting room and after a few minutes, we were ushered into one of Omaha’s newest speakeasies, Osteria Segreto. It is a cozy bar with seating for about 20 and has that prohibition era vibe to it. The cocktails are crafty and original, and priced just right! This would be the perfect place to grab a pre or post dinner drink – it is not really intended to be the bar you spend your whole night at, so we did not…

It was time to liven things up! We crossed the street and stopped into Reno’s, which had just opened for the first time ever hours before. It is a brand new karaoke bar, but not the typical one stage with a mix of good and questionable performers. Rather, this is more in line with what you would imagine to see in Korea – private karaoke rooms to rent with your friends.

Unfortunately, all rooms were booked, but they did give each of us a coupon to come back for a free one-hour room rental – yes please! We poked around and noticed that the rooms varied in size and theme. Looking for a fun date night? Reserve the small room perfect for 2 people! Want to have your birthday there and sing Spice Girls with all your friends? Rent the large room for 20 people! It’s $5/person per hour – not a bad deal!

So that was my Friday night and it was a good one!

Saturday night was date night and the manfriend and I wanted tacos. Shocking. Earlier in the week I had spotted an article on Omaha.com about a new taco joint and get this…margarita garden!! It’s called Taco Co. and just opened in Benson.

Side note – as I am writing this, I am realizing how many new places I visited in less than 48 hours. I’m pretty impressed with myself for being so hip 😉

Anyways, back to the tacos. We put our name in at the hostess stand and were told it would be a 40-minute wait, but that patio seating was first come first serve. We gave it a shot and got lucky because a couple was just finishing their last drinks and told us we could sneak right into their table when they left. Thank you, kind couple!

The patio/margarita garden had a fun atmosphere with string lights, corn hole, wooden seating, and some greenery. It was so cute! Although, the most exciting discovery was that they serve their drinks in giant pouches aka adult Capri Sun! How cool is that! So of course, we had to try those while enjoying our puffy tacos. Yep, puffy…just how we like them! We tried the chicken, beef, and carnitas and had no complaints!

Date night win fo’ sho!

As if I hadn’t eaten out enough already this weekend, I had Sunday lunch plans with my “little sister”. She and I have been on a quest to find Omaha’s best fried chicken and this outing took us to Surfside Club in North Omaha.

This is such a quintessential summer spot – situated right on the Missouri river, live music, palm trees, bright colored picnic tables, and an all-around fun atmosphere. The menu is small (choice of fried chicken, catfish, or pork tenderloin meals), but it is SO good. I can only speak to the fried chicken, but this quickly became one of our favorites. Super juicy and tender chicken accompanied by french fries and corn fritters. Those count as a vegetable, right?

This was the perfect place to end my weekend of food and drink adventures!

And because I know there are some eye rolls out there judging me for how much I dine out…relax! I got my 10k+ steps in each day and am on my way to meet with my personal trainer tonight! Hashtag balance.

Summer Highlights!

Remember that time I started a blog, posted somewhat frequently, and then dropped off for a month? Yeahhhh….me too. My bad!

Note to self, need to work on my follow through. I have been doing plenty of things around town, snapping all sorts of pictures, and constantly saying to myself “ooooh I’ll have to write about this on the blog!”. And then I don’t.

These past few weeks were so busy hosting out of town visitors, celebrating engagements and birthdays for friends, and finishing up some course work for my job. The latter of which was not my favorite, but gotta check that box!

Anyways, things have settled down and to regroup I took myself on a date night tonight. In “treat yo’self” fashion I went to an early movie and then to dinner at Herbe Sainte in Aksarben (gimme all dat cornbread). I love being social, but I also am a fan of going out to dinner alone on purpose every now and then.

Ok, back to what you came here for. This might be overwhelming but bear with me – I warned you I have been busy! Highlights of happenings below:

Charred: spiked lemonades, creative sliders, and a relaxing patio. Need I say more?!

WWE Smackdown Live: My friend and I “won” tickets to this event and holy moly…it was hilariously awesome. It took place at Century Link, we were 7 rows from the ring, and surrounded by die hard fans. This was such a trip, people were so into it!

Thomas Lake 4th of July: Visited a friend’s lake house out in Ashland, NE and enjoyed an adorable golf cart parade and spent the afternoon on my giant swan float with friends. #Basic

4th of July Part 2: Attempted to spend the evening grilling and watching fireworks from my rooftop, but hotdogs were literally flying off the grill and wine was blowing out of cups. Storms, so rude. Sooooo…late night Pizza Hut and couch hangs it was 😊

Shakespeare on the Green: I didn’t really follow the Shakespearian dialogue, but did enjoy sitting outside in the park at this free event with my self-packed picnic and friends! Thanks to UNO for putting on a great rendition of “Much Ado About Nothing!”

Movie Party at Alamo Drafthouse: “So I Married an Ax Murderer” was the movie of the week and with no shame at all we put on our aprons, fake glasses, grabbed fake axes, and had ourselves a grand ole Monday night. Alamo has tons of movie parties featuring some solid cult classics!

Beaver Lake: Office picnic! This is the closest thing to a real lake I have experienced out here. It’s a good size and lots of people on speed boats, jet skis, and tubes. I took my “little sister” with me on this adventure and totally forgot to fill out the high-risk form. I’m such a great role model…

360 Restaurant (top floor of Harrah’s): Just when I think I have seen Omaha in every light, this fine dining establishment gave me a whole new perspective! This place is across the river from Omaha and has the best view of our city skyline! I won’t go into details on this one, but uhhhh my friend and I found ourselves enjoying a totally comp’d evening of the finest filets, wine, and a bit of gambling. Good times.

Loma Tavern: Because when your boyfriend wants a change of pace, you drive 1.5 hours out of the city, bike 12 miles in the blazing sun, and then cool off at the Loma Tavern. Famous for polka dancing and cheap drinks, this was such a gem! It felt like we were in someone’s 1970 living room in the best way. We ordered 2 waters, a coke, and 2 beers for $8…and they were all being kept chilled in igloo coolers and served by a woman named Mary who had to be 75+. AKA adorable.

Skyview Terrace: A new rooftop bar! On top of the Holland Center!

And a few more noteworthy shout outs: Sumtur Amphitheater rendition of “Hairspray”, Eagle Run golf course, Dandelion Pop-Up, Kaneko’s virtual reality exhibit and my sichuan flower experience. Too many good times!

Ok, that’s all I have energy for right now. But consider this my comeback! I am going try and be more consistent and keep you all in the loop on life in Omaha!

Sneak Peak: This weekend will be spent wishing farewell to a friend at Blackstone Social, perhaps attending the Balloon and Wine festival, and having some fun with live music and the best fried chicken at Surfside!

Food Comas and Ax Throwing

Soaring Wings

Finding time and energy to write about all the things I am doing is so hard when I am constantly in a food coma. Ugh, the struggle is real.

I had friends from back home visit this month and took them to all my usual spots – The Diner for breakfast in the Old Market, Mister Toad’s for the best happy hour patio, Soaring Wings vineyard for wine tasting, Nosh for a late dinner, the Saint Lucia festival for food and music along the river, and so much more.

As with most guests visiting for the first time, they were surprised and impressed by all there was to do in this little gem of a city. They came out here with the intention of convincing me to return home sooner rather than later, but after showing them what’s up in Omaha, they changed their tune and are already planning a return trip!

This place never runs out of new things to do and this past weekend we tried out the latest downtown addition, Flying Timber. I heard about this new ax throwing bar on the morning radio and was excited to check it out. Side note, people always ask me how I find these activities, but uh there’s no secret trick. I read billboards, read the newspaper, and listen to the radio mostly. Call me old school?

Anyways, I visited their website (https://www.flyingtimber.com) and made a reservation online, which was super easy to do. We rented a lane for an hour and it was $20/person. The staff was so friendly and excited to see us. They brought us to the back and introduced us to our lane coach, who went over some safety rules and helped us with our technique.

He was assigned to our group for the whole hour and made sure we didn’t accidently chop any body parts off and also politely corrected our form…constantly. It is not as easy as he made it look – a lot goes into throwing that ax and getting it on the target!

We were worried the hour was going to be too long, but it flew by and we had so much fun. I even hit a few bullseyes, and have a video to prove it (Bullseye!). It doesn’t matter how many takes it took, all that matters is that it happened 😉

I’m already excited to go back! I’m hoping I can convince the office to take a field trip here for team building. Well, actually, one coworker seems pretty upset at another coworker who always hits “reply all” so maybe ax throwing isn’t the smartest idea…

A little bit of this, a little bit of that

Beyond Golf

Rapid Fire Updates! I have been slacking on the blogging, but I most definitely have not been slacking on the Omaha adventures! Here are some quick highlights from what I have been up to:

Boulder Creek Mini Golf – got a hole in one (twice), enjoyed some of the wine they offer, and got 2 tickets to come back for free. YES PLEASE!

Beyond Golf – This was a thing I did. A thing I did poorly. Simulation golf is not as easy as the website made it seem! We opted to golf on Pebble Beach; they gave us one hour to golf 9 holes. Haaaaaa. We made it through 4 holes mainly because I was averaging 20+ swings each hole. Oops.

Fairmont Mercantile – skipped out of the office a little early on a Wednesday to attend a coworker’s farewell party. She rented out the old school theater inside of Fairmont Mercantile in the Old Market and we watched a few episodes of The Office. Good times.

Dale Clark Library – this is a new thing I do, spend Sunday afternoons picking out a new book for the week. Interested in what I’m reading? Find me on GoodReads and then let me creep what you have been reading too!

Flemings Steakhouse – their happy hour is so dang good that I went here 2 weeks in a row. Go ahead, judge me. I understand. Seriously though, $8 for a prime bacon cheeseburger/fries and $5 glass of some fine wine – I would be wasting money by not going!

Copacabana – Do you have that song stuck in your head now? Because it’s been in mine for nearly 2 weeks now, which is how long ago I went here. Thursday night post-mini golf glass of wine on the outdoor patio – perfection! The manfriend enjoyed a cigar while we relaxed and watched my guilty pleasure on the TVs outside, American Ninja Warrior! I love that shiz.

The Ma’s and their canoe in Loess Hills

Jams – brunch at Jam’s is my jam! After cheering on some friends at the Papillion Half Marathon, we headed to Jams in the Old Market. I needed to carbo load after watching all those fit people 😉 I had a short rib omelet with a southwestern sauce and some taters – so dang good! Fun Fact: they now offer $15 bottomless mimosas on Saturday and Sundays – noted.

Maria’s in Ralston – I never knew puffy tacos were a thing before I moved here. I feel deprived, love dat puff! I had a steak puffy taco and a chicken enchilada. And some sangria, duh.

Loess Hill’s Scenic Byway – Girls trip!! I spent Memorial Day weekend with my “Ma’s” aka my two best gal pals in town! We call each other “Ma” since we are always looking out for each other – aw shucks. We rented a farmhouse on AirBnB, biked through the cornfields, dodged a lot of bugs, grilled some grub, sat by the fire, talked about life, made pancakes for breakfast, and got the giggles off of spiked seltzer!

Puffy tacos!!

Craft Sliders + Beer – finally checked out this new spot in the Old Market. I’ll give it a solid 7 out of 10 rating. The original slider was my favorite, followed by the hot chicken slider, followed by the fries, followed by the mac burger.  I washed it all down with a crisp watermelon sour beer!

Whew, that was a lot. I visited a few other spots too, but I’m too embarrassed to fully disclose how often we dine out, so I’ll call it quits here.

Now, go! Go do fun things in Omaha! And tell me about them in the comments!

Platte River State Park – So Outdoorsy!

Exciting news – I did something in the Omaha area that did not involve food and drinks this weekend! Granted, this activity was to offset a highly indulgent dinner on Friday, but hey…baby steps.

We had another birthday celebration this weekend (I never realized how many Omaha friends I had born in a month span), but this one did not involve any form of pedaling – thank goodness. Rather, I crashed guys night in Lincoln and met up with the group at Rodizio, a Brazilian steakhouse with all you can eat meat. Much more my style.

We ate ourselves into a food coma, went out for a few drinks, and then went back to the hotel feeling quite gluttonous.

In an attempt to undo some of the previous night’s damage, we decided to make a detour on the ride home to hike around and be one with nature at the Platte River State Park. It is conveniently located in Louisville, which is about halfway between Lincoln and Omaha – the perfect pit-stop!

We opted for the day pass option ($6) and asked for directions to The Falls. The park offers a ton of activities such as hiking, biking, archery, canoeing, and even lodging…in teepees (totally going back for that!). It was a cloudy day and we were kind of tired, so we kept it simple and walked some of the trails.

This is the most “nature-y” place I have been to out here – lots of greenery, wooden bridges crossing over creeks, birds chirping, and all that other good stuff. We took “the trail to the falls” and surprisingly, there was hardly anyone else out there. We passed a few families, but that was about it. It was nice to be in the quiet and have a break from our usual routine of buzzing around doing a million social activities.

We made our way to the falls, which for expectation management are pretty small, and enjoyed the sound of the water. Until some kids ruined the moment by stomping up the trail yelling that they didn’t want to wear their shoes anymore. Ugh, buzzkill.

We snapped some photos and decided we liked the place enough to come back for a longer visit in the future. But until then, we had to get back to Omaha for our double date night – dinner at El Rancho and the new Avengers movie!

PS – while this mini waterfall was neat, if you’re looking for the true waterfall experience, you should check out Smith Falls in Valentine, NE!

Yum Yum – Dim Sum at Gold Mountain

When your friend’s parents are visiting from Guatemala, why not take them out for an absurd amount of American Chinese food? Spending $450+ on dim sum is normal for a Wednesday night…right?

For expectation management, we were a group of fourteen, so it wasn’t totally ridiculous. Just normal ridiculous.

I’m not typically a fan of venturing to Aksarben Village, mainly because I have become a snob about business development since moving here and I don’t like all these modern areas popping up. I’m all about the renovation and restoration projects; it’s become one of my favorite topics to debate.

Anyways, so we went to Gold Mountain in Aksarben (Nebraska spelled backwards) and had the back room reserved for our large group. It was a little cramped and a little awkward for those sitting next to the door, but overall, it was nice to be separated from the main dining area.

We decided to dine family style (aww shucks) and delegated two of our friends to place the dim sum order. If you’re not familiar with dim sum, it essentially means ordering a bunch of small plates of food to be shared by the group. In our case, “a bunch” translated to nearly 100 plates. I wish I was kidding, but I’m not…

Unfortunately, for my friend Nick and I, we ended up seated near the door and since the waitress couldn’t get around the table, she would pass everything to us to be handed out. That got old fast, but was pretty comical too. It was a lot to keep up with! We were dishing out plates left and right while trying not to knock over pots of hot tea. THE STRESS WAS REAL.

There were crab rangoon, egg rolls, lemon pancit, beef noodles, steamed buns, shrimp balls, bbq pork in rice wraps, white/fried rice, turnip cakes, and the list goes on. The plates kept on coming! We actually got so full that we asked them to cancel the rest of the order, but it was too late, it was already being prepared.

Oh darn, you mean more delicious food is on the way and we can’t stop it?

The amount of to-go boxes we had was almost as embarrassing as watching us trying to get in formation for a group photo. “Get the box of fortune cookies out of the way…Leah, you stained your shirt so stand like this to hide it…now we can’t see this guy on the left…what the heck is on the TV behind us, turn that off!”

This dysfunction is what I love most about this group – never a dull moment! If you’re feeling hungry for some dim sum, check out Gold Mountain!

PS – my fortune cookie said, “don’t worry about the stock market, you have already made a great investment.” This got deep REAL quick, but I don’t hate it!

Will Bike for Beer at the Papillion Pint-A-Gon

For everyone who thinks Nebraska is all flatland, I challenge you to do the pint-a-gon tap room bike ride where you will suddenly become very aware of every incline and/or hill in this state. And by in this state, I mean in Papillion where the 9-mile event takes place.

My friend, Olivia, was celebrating her birthday this past weekend and unfortunately for me, she is quite the athletic lady. This meant she wanted to kick off the weekend by getting a group of us together for a bike ride on Saturday morning.

Ugh, a Saturday morning bike ride the day after flying back from a work trip?! Oh, but wait, the bike ride stops at 6 breweries? Ok, I’m interested and suddenly feeling very sporty.

So, Saturday morning I’m feeling pretty cool in my Nikes and workout clothes and my bag filled with water bottles, a bike lock, helmet, and sunscreen – I looked the part. But then I had to get the bike loaded onto the car rack and let’s just say, anyone who passed me on the highway would immediately know I was a phony because that thing looked so jacked up and there were strings blowing the breeze like crazy. Ah well, we made it with no incident.

Each month the ride is hosted by a different brewery or distillery, so for May we started things off at Patriarch Distillery. Registration starts at 10am and the ride starts at 11am. Although, registration is a very loose term here. By registration they mean make some friends, grab a drink, and get a quick overview of the route from the ride coordinator.

Of course, no one remembered the route and we got so distracted organizing our group of about 15 that we were the last to leave. No worries, we are a smart bunch and figured things out. The sun was shining, we had the speakers blasting, life was good. And then our friend got a flat about half a mile in. DOH.

I won’t bore you with the details, but the bike situation was resolved and we made it to the first brewery, Pint Nine. This leg of the ride was only about a mile and it was flat so I was jazzed up and feeling confident. We grabbed a beer, played a few rounds of UNO, a few rounds of cornhole, and then made our way to the next stop…directly next store. Dang, this bike ride is a breeze!

This one was called Kros Strain and my friend convinced me it was actually a CrossFit gym/brewery because it sounds like “cross train”. I’m such a sucker. Anyhoo, they had some good brews here and they also had a food truck outside for snacks, The Churro Truck.

3 stops down and 3 to go. I was given fair warning that the 1.5 mile ride to the next one would have a hill, but given that I crushed these first 2 legs, I wasn’t sweating it. Until I was sweating it, a lot. Literally.

I made it about halfway up the hill before having to hop off and walk the rest. Of course, right as I’m nearing the top and looking less than ideal, I bump into a coworker who comments he didn’t know I was so into cycling. Aha! The outfit is working!

Anyways, so we stopped at Nebraska Brewing company where I spent most of my time playing giant Jenga and losing at cornhole. Good times. Then we had a 2-mile ride to Infusion Brewery where we had some snacks and snapped some group pics. What a lovely looking bunch, eh!

Finally, we made our way to Liquid Sunshine Tap Room. This last leg took a lot out of me. I was hot, it was on an incline, we had been out for 4+ hours.  I was on the struggle bus and called it quits at this stop. I pretended like I lost track of time and had to get going back.

“I should probably just grab an Uber from here back to my car and then I’ll come back for the bike….ya know, because I need to get going on those errands for the BBQ tonight.” It was half true! I did have BBQ errands to run…they just weren’t as urgent as I made them seem. Don’t judge me.

All in all, I had a blast, even if it was challenging for me at times. It was fun to explore a new part of town and visit some cool breweries along the way! The next ride is on June 9th and will be hosted by Nebraska Brewing Company if you’re feeling adventurous and want to give it a go!

A Wheely Good Time on the Omaha Patio Ride

No idea who these people are, but it’s a better picture of the ride than any that I have 😉

Hot dang, travelling really makes keeping up with the blog tough! I came back from Jamaica to find out I was headed to a conference in Cocoa Beach the following week, so I haven’t spent nearly as much time as I wanted to on here. I know, poor me. But! In between trips I managed to fit in two birthday celebrations, both of which involved biking for beer – priorities, eh!

First up was the Omaha Patio Ride (AKA the pedal tavern AKA a bar on wheels AKA 16 grown adults decked out in glow sticks, blasting 90’s music, enjoying some drinks, and making their way…slowly…around the Old Market).

The Omaha Patio Ride is such a gem and so much fun for group outings – in our case, we were celebrating a 30th birthday. We reserved the ride for 9pm on a Saturday and were excited to start planning for our 2-hour adventure on wheels.

The ride is BYOB, so naturally the first thing was to figure out who was making the beer run – duh. Next, we decided that since it was a night ride, we should go with a glow stick theme – glow bracelets, glow glasses, glow balloons…basically, if it glowed, we had it. Obnoxious? Yes. Worth it? Also, yes. Finally, we put together a playlist that made other people wish they were hanging out with us 😉

We assembled at The Stadium Club to pass out the party hats, sign our waivers, and eventually made our way onto the ride. While the ride fits 16 people, not everyone has to pedal (thank g)– there is bench seating in the back, a few seats along the side, and space for 1 or 2 people to stand in the middle and bartend that all do not require pedaling. Obviously, given my lack of endurance, I volunteered to be the bartender (and DJ).

“Pump Up The Jam” was blasting and we were on our merry way! We made stops at Billy Frogs, T Henry’s, and The Tavern – and fun fact, because we were a part of the group, we got drink specials at each stop! Although, to be honest, we were having more fun pedaling around outside than we did at the bars.

We were feeling the vibe of the night and asked the driver if we could make one more loop around the block before wrapping things up…and then immediately regretted it. Because it was uphill and pedaling was getting hard (or so I heard). No worries though, our dear friend Lambert hopped out and pushed us along from the back until we made it back to the end point. Thanks, Lambert, you da best!

Good times were had by all! Except maybe for the birthday boy who had a case of mono coming in hot and felt like borderline death most of the night. Woops…

Well, shoot. This was way more long winded than I anticipated and I need to get cracking on some laundry, so I’ll leave you all in suspense about what my other biking and beer birthday outing entailed!

Jacobo’s Mexican Grocery

I’m back – and I’m tan! After spending a week in the Jamaican sunshine indulging in too many buffets and too many drinks, I was ready to get home and get back to a healthy diet.

Just kidding, I wanted a burrito.

My first day post-vacation started out with good intentions as I made my weekly trip to Trader Joe’s to stock up on all things healthy and lean. And too many plantain chips. Then I buzzed around all morning running errands, but by the time I got home and put the groceries away, all motivation to cook was gone.

I scrolled around on Yelp! for some inspiration, but nothing was jumping out and I didn’t want to waste money and calories on mediocre delivery. Although, I could feel myself getting hangry, so I knew I needed something quick. Ain’t nobody got time to wait an hour for food!

Luckily, my brain suddenly remembered my love for Jacobo’s and their top notch Mexican food. I hopped in the car and made the 10-minute drive to my favorite South Omaha grocery store. It is not obvious to passerby’s that they have hot and fresh food at the back counter; most would assume it is just a regular ole Mexican grocery store. But we all know what happens when you assume… (ahaha this joke never gets old).

This cash only little shop is always bumping and this day was no different. I waited in a line of about 15 people, but they are super speedy so my turn came up quick. Every time I go here, I always panic when I get to the counter. I’ll have a plan in my head to only get 2 enchiladas or 1 burrito and call it good, but nope.

I make my initial order, but for some reason every time they ask me, “anything else?” I feel the pressure to keep getting more until I realize I won’t have enough cash to cover “anything else”.

On this particular trip, I fell victim to 6 enchiladas, 1 burrito, a half-pound of carnitas, fresh chips, and salsa. My bad. I didn’t eat it all that day though – pinky promise I had some self-control! My total was less than $20, which is such a deal for the quality of the food and I have made it into 4 meals so far.

Well, that’s kind of a lie, it wasn’t just that purchase that I made into 4 meals. I went to the zoo with my friend, Jordan, the next day and after walking all afternoon we were hungry. So naturally I suggested we zip over to Jacobo’s since he had never tried it. I kept my cool and only ordered 1 burrito and 1 chile relleno – proud moment!

Burrito time – pork, rice, and beans

After my double dose of Mexican, I decided the time had to come to end the vacation eating and actually get back to normal eating. I also immediately decided to adjust that time to Monday morning so I could enjoy my friend’s birthday dinner at Nicola’s – oops!

Junkstock – All Things Vintage…and Delicious!

I told my friend I was going to Junkstock this past weekend and he asked me why I was going to a Gentlemen’s club on a Saturday morning. Fail.

In case anyone else came across “Junkstock” in their search for things to do in the Omaha area and had some questions, I can assure you this is a family friendly and fully clothed event.

In fact, Junkstock is quickly becoming known as one of the countries best vintage festivals. Junkstock began in 2012 as a small event with a handful of vendors, but over the years it has expanded to become a semi-annual, three-day event at Sycamore Farms with 200+ vendors, 20+ food trucks, and a stage for local musicians to show us what they got…talk about success!

We paid our $10 cash only entrance fee and wandered the crowd trying to find our friends. It turns out saying, “I’m standing near the wooden pallet vendor” or “there is a guy selling artisan chocolates to my left” doesn’t really narrow things down at an event like this, woops. Thank goodness for the pony ride station and thank goodness there was only one.

Before getting too carried away in our hunt for all things dusty, rusty, and adorable, we obviously had to stop and snap a picture at this totally staged photo-op – an instagrammer’s dream!

Ok, now that we got that out of the way, time to focus! You really learn a lot about your friends by observing which vendors they are drawn to. I won’t name names, but I had no idea my friend would be so into tea cups glued together to form a bird bath – fascinating! This is truly the one-of-a-kind type of junk people flock to the event for.

We strolled past locally made cutting boards, pallet wood everything, homemade soaps, beef jerky out the wazoo, carefully crafted greeting cards, more home décor than we could fathom, and so much more!

I’m a total sucker and/or a Basic B because I was loving all the weathered pallet wood décor – I couldn’t resist! I strolled down Penny Lane (not kidding) and bought an old teal ladder to use as a blanket holder in my living room. So stinkin’ cute!

Eventually all our strolling made us hungry, so we wandered over to the food truck area, grabbed a bite, and hung out around one of the fire pits they had setup. It took 3 days to wash the campfire smell out of my hair, but totally worth it.

This was such a fun day with friends and I am already looking forward to its return this September!
